5150 Subic Bay: Philippines

Subic Bay is located on the southwest side of Luzon Island in the Philippines. A secured Freeport zone, formally the shores of a US Naval Base. It's a bit of an American take on the Philippines and you can see the slums on the other side of the fence. Though unknown meat curry and rice was still on offer for breakfast, so we certainly weren't neglected of experiencing a bit of the incredibly friendly local culture.

Mim and I accidentally booked business class tickets which turned out to be a terrific mistake to have made. With a 6hr stop over in KL we definitely made the most of the lounge.

On my Saturday morning spin, I snapped both my gear cables. Potential disaster. Sunrise Events drove me to the bike shop on the other side of town to get it sorted asap and had lunch delivered. So grateful.

Race day started with a lively vibe. Team bus to the start, sunrise, hot, loads of local clubs doing team chants and a Dabakan performance on the beach. The swim course was dead flat and crystal clear with a lane rope to follow the entire way. It made for a fast swim and I was first out of the water. The bike leg was undulating with a long narrow blind corner type decent in the middle. I lead off the bike with a 10minute lead. The flat run stretched along the waterfront and even at 8am I was making the most of the ice sponges at every aid station. I finished to take the win. The ice baths filled with cans of beer at the finish line made for an even better day. Solid effort to Michelle and Dimitty for rounding out the podium amidst European Ironman training.

See you again next year Subic Bay - you aced my event experience.
